Desmond Tutu Prefers Hell Over a 'Homophobic' Heaven

Desmond Tutu
By the world's standards, Desmond Tutu, the retired archbishop of South Africa, is an intelligent and influential man. A social rights activist who became known worldwide in the 1980s as a staunch opponent of apartheid, Tutu has been a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, the Pacem in Terris Award, the Sydney Peace Prize, the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal for Freedom.1 Yet, in the eyes of the Lord God, Desmond Tutu is a fool (Rom 1:22).

Speaking in Cape Town at a press conference announcing the launch of "Free and Equal," a United Nations campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality, Tutu made the following statement:
I cannot worship a homophobic God. . . . I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven … I mean I would much rather go to the other place. . . . I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this.2
Tutu presumes that God, and the Christians who serve Him, are 'homophobic.' Merriam Webster defines homophobia as an "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals."3 God does not fear the homosexual. Rather, it is the homosexual—and every unrepentant sinner—who ought to fear God, for He alone has authority to pour out His wrath upon those who reject Him (Matt 10:28; Luke 12:5). It is evident, then, that Tutu has no comprehension or understanding of the God about whom he speaks. Of course, Tutu's ignorance of the things of God is quite understandable:
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Cor 2:14)
No one has asked Desmond Tutu to worship "a homophobic God." Men are called, however, to worship the one true God who alone is righteous, just and thrice-holy. He is a God who judges sin—all sin. Yet He also is a God who offers the free gift of salvation. Sending His only Son, the God-man Jesus Christ, to live a sinless life and to bear the wrath of God that was reserved for sinners, this God offers forgiveness to the repentant sinner. When this great God pours out His grace and Spirit upon a man, that man is reborn, regenerated into a new life in Christ. No longer a slave to sin, the man born from above now finds himself free as he willingly and gratefully submits to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor 6:9–11)
Desmond Tutu does not know the God of the Bible, the God of whom he presumes to speak. Nor does he realize the gravity of the statement he has made when he says, "I would much rather go to the other place [i.e., Hell]," for unless Tutu repents and turns to Christ, God, who is the perfect judge, one day will give him exactly what he desires:
But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you. If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers. “You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son. These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. (Psalm 50:16-21)

  1. Sadly, he influences thousands - leading them to the wide path, worshiping a god of their own creation. In their quest to be tolerant and "loving" they stand as teachers and preachers of hell. How horrible it will be for him on Judgment Day.

  2. Desmond Tutu..no surprise. Headline in the National Post (Cdn newspaper) this morning; the pope, "Who am I to judge homosexual priests?" The western world has gone gay crazy.

  3. It amazes me that just because a person doesn't agree with gay sex, you are labeled a homophobic. I don't agree with adultery sex either, does that make me an adultererphobic?

  4. Well written article.

I agree with you that Tutu has no concept of WHO God is and nor does he understand homophobia.

Christians are not afraid of homosexuals, but we are afraid FOR them. Homosexuality has caused more death, despair, violence, pain, and heartbreak than anything on this planet other than abortion. Jesus could not condone a lifestyle that is so diametrically opposed to His Will for His Creation. God hates SIN and homosexuality is sin. Homosexuality is an affront to the the very Character and Nature of GOD who is holy and HIS created order.

Most importantly, we are fearing the fact that God's word means what he has SAID. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:-Hebrews 9:27. We FEAR for their eternal destiny.

1Cr 6:9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men"

1 Timothy 1:8-11 “But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted."

The word of God calls it sin and yet Tutu calls it homophobia.~

Each person must make a choice--to believe the word of God or to believe words from man. In the end, "Let God be TRUE and every man be a LIAR"--Romans 3:4---

  5. Desmond Tutu is deceived and will go to the place prepared for those who serve the desires of the creature instead of the Creator! He knows God's decree on homosexuality as laid out plainly in his word yet he refuses to listen and instead give approval to those who practice such evil deeds.

  6. It may have sounded good to many but according to Jesus: "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."" (Matt 12:36-37,ESV)

  8. Is your God homophobic? Desmond Tutu dosen't makes the assumption he or she is. He states that he dosen't worship a homophobic God and that he wouldn't under any circumstances. People are complex and sexuality is deeply personal. I'm sure any serious study of human behaviour and experience would testify as to this. How we as individuals respond to each others endeavors to be happy and not to suffer and our succussful dealings to this end is dependent on our ability to genuinely reflect the true nature of ourselves and each other. By being honest, aware and responsible in our dealings with each other, giving real consideration and having compassion for each other and the state of our existence, it is possible for us to realise the kingdom of heaven.

    1. I see that you have believed the big lie that has plagued man since the fall of Adam in the Garden of Eden, namely, lets just all do our best to get along with each other and surely the great God and Creator of all there is (in whom we really do not believe that He even exists) will reward our valiant efforts by escorting us into our own version of paradise where we may for all eternity continue to mock Him by our self-conceived ideas of right (wrong is not to be considered) and where we would continue to insult Him by shaking our fist in His face (which you will never see, unless you repent) and tell Him how wrong He has been all along.

The truth is that you, Anonymous, Mr. Tutu, Mr. Pope (all of them) "...will not come to Me that you may have life" John 5:40. It is also true that you, Anonymous, Mr. Tutu and Mr. Pope (all of them) are condemned by the God that you spurn because you refuse to believe on the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, by humbling yourself before Him, confessing your sins, and seeking His mercy (John 3:18).

Instead, you would rather excuse your sins and condemn those who tell you the truth about God, His Son, and your responsibility to Him, namely to repent of your sins and believe on His Son for salvation and eternal life. Our God is not afraid of a homosexual (or any sinner) as the term 'homophobic' implies. No, in fact, He hates sin of every kind and will punish those who commit sin and refuse to repent of their sin by placing them in a place known as HELL for all of eternity from which there is no escape, reprieve, appeal or pardon. Pardon is offered in this life only and it is realized only when a sinner repents of his sin and seeks the mercy offered by God because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ. You probably know all of this but yet refuse to humble yourself before God. Nonetheless, it is my prayer that our Lord would draw you to himself that you may be saved.

    2. Oh yes Tutu makes a set of assumptions and if you are not allowing yourself to see them you are kidding yourself only. Desmond Tutu just like the rest of detached from the Word of God liberals assumes clearly that God who condemns homosexuality as S I N is "homophobic" which illogical, irrational, inconsistent, irresponsible alien to the Gospel of Jesus Christ emotional charge and fraud. What do you think these below words mean if not an assumption?

"I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this."

Have you noticed the word "FEEL" above? That should be your clue to the nature of this assertion and how vague and bogus it really is. Now if we go by the word "WRITTEN" instead of word "feel" we can clearly discern and be assured what in many places the Revelation of God teaches about that i.e. that homosexuality is a damning sin just as adultery, thievery

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God. Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."

      1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NET

This testifies assuredly to the true nature of humanity but it does not have to be that way and that is why Paul refereed to their sins as PAST. True Kingdom of God does not come by reflection, honesty responsibility and compassion APART from the reveled truth of GOD for then it is its mockery and altogether different man made religion. You want to be compassionate in true sense? Testify to the written truth and not emotional shenanigans of men posing as truth.

  9. Anonymous----Then Desmond Tutu should be focused on the TRUTH as we ALL should if we are to be "honest and responsible in our dealings with each other". And we get the truth about sexuality from the word of God.

Not sure what you mean by "it is possible for us to (realize) the kingdom of heaven"??
    `
Jesus said "you must be born again-John chp.3

---"reflect the true nature of ourselves"??

Anonymous, that would be the worst thing to do. The whole problem with man is that our true nature is sinful and has a proclivity to indulge in sin. If it were NOT for the grace of God there would be no restraint.God is holy and we are unholy. Only Jesus can cleanse our sins away to even enter the kingdom of heaven. Apart from Repentance and faith in Christ a person cannot realize themselves even the smallest atom of the "kingdom of heaven"

Question??, as an example in the word of God~ was the city of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed, (man, woman and child)- burned up by fire from heaven, never to be rebuilt again because they were just not good hosts, not honest and compassionate people? If that were the case I have to ask,, where is Martha Stewart when you need her? Humanitarianism? Where was Desmond Tutu when God supposedly "needed" him? Why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah ----really?

According to the word of the Only Living and True GOD--Jesus' half brother Jude says "Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in (gross immorality) and went after (strange flesh), are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire." Maybe they were exhibited as an example and "punished in eternal fire" for serving strange hors de ouevres.

And of course, when Moses says in Deuteronomy 23:17 "There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel." I'm sure\he meant no bad hostesses. They took their tea times seriously.
