To Those Who Would Undermine the Headship of Christ: Fall on Your Faces

Addressing the media on Saturday, 16 March, the newly elected Pope Francis I was heard reminding Roman Catholics that "Jesus, not the pope, is at the center of the Church."

It will not be surprising if those professing Christians who seek to unite Christianity and Roman Catholicism in ecumenical bliss use this statement to bolster their endeavors. Already, pastor Rick Warren called on his many social media followers to fast and pray for the cardinals as they gathered to elect a 'new leader':
Source
John Mark Comer, pastor of Solid Rock Church in Portland, Oregon, would go so far as to state that he was praying for his Roman Catholic 'brothers and sisters' in the midst of the papal vote:
Source
Following the announcement of Bergoglio's election, Rick Warren would tweet his congratulations:

For those who are unaware, 'Habemus Papam' is the Latin announcement, 'We have a pope!' Oddly, it was a phrase that self-proclaimed evangelical Christian Rick Warren felt comfortable using, a gesture that ought to be quite enlightening to anyone who may still be wondering just how deep Warren's affinity runs for ecumenism and compromise.

Now the new pontiff is on record as saying that Jesus is the center of the church and not the pope, and one cannot help but think that this quote might end up being used ad nauseam by compromising Christians to defend Pope Francis I and the aberrant, heretical gospel of the Roman Catholic Church. If the pope truly believed that Christ should be the focus of his church, however, then his first act as pope should have been to abolish the office of pope.

What is curious, then, is that Francis I has stated that Jesus is at the center of the church. Yet, Jesus Christ is far more than merely the center of the church, He is the head of the Church. That is, He is head of the true Church, those chosen before the foundation of the world who have been saved by grace and granted repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. These comprise the true Bride of Christ. Jesus Christ alone has authority over the Church. He is not merely the center or the focus of the redeemed, He is their King, their Lord and their Master.
And he [Christ] is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. (Col. 1:18)
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. (Eph. 5:23–24)
In fact, Jesus Christ is far more than just the Head of the Church, He is the Head of all things:
having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (Eph. 1:18–23)
The Roman Catholic Church denies this biblical truth and instead elevates a mere man to the position of head of the church. From Vatican I:
So, then, if anyone says that the Roman Pontiff has merely an office of supervision and guidance, and not the full and supreme power of jurisdiction over the whole Church, and this not only in matters of faith and morals, but also in those which concern the discipline and government of the Church dispersed throughout the whole world; or that he has only the principal part, but not the absolute fullness, of this supreme power; or that this power of his is not ordinary and immediate both over all and each of the Churches and over all and each of the pastors and faithful: let him be anathema. (Vatican I, Session 4, Ch. 3)
Vatican II further affirms this:
The pope's power of primacy over all, both pastors and faithful, remains whole and intact. In virtue of his office, that is as Vicar of Christ and pastor of the whole Church, the Roman Pontiff has full, supreme and universal power over the Church. And he is always free to exercise this power. (Vatican II, LG 22)
Thus, no matter what pleasing words may be spoken by Pope Francis I, no matter how friendly his themes may sound to weak-willed Christians, the truth is that his very willingness to bear the title and office of 'Vicar of Christ', to dare to allow himself to be revered as the head of the church, means that he is walking contrary to Scripture, and in rebellion to the Lord Jesus Christ. Such a man, unless he repents and turns to Christ, will one day face unspeakable judgment.

The true Church can have only one Head, and that is Jesus Christ. May those who seek to usurp that headship fall on their faces before Him:

  1. "Jesus, not the pope, is at the center of the church." If I understand catholic dogma correctly, he is correct. Jesus has been relegated to a postion below the pope and their Mary (perhaps the fight is on between those two as to who will be #1). And we have the pope of the (un)protestants, Rick Warren in typical grandious form, seeking a photo-op, of sorts, with the one receiving more attention than he is. Perhaps a trip to Rome would be in order for a ring kissing ceremony.

Thanks for the MacArthur clip to return us to sanity and exalt the Lord Jesus to His rightful place as Head over all things to the Church.

  2. Exactly, the pope remains the head, while Jesus is demoted. Unfortunately, knowing today's professing Christians as we do, this comment will bring praise from evangelicals who don't understand that this is still undermining the headship of Christ.

    1. The question is: is one a Christian who affirms or even acknowledges or even tolerates Roman popery and its claims?

This has been confessed for a reason and as a witness to the Word of God:

"There is no other head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ. Nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalts himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God."

  3. 'should abolish the office of pope'...so true! You brought clarity to that issue.

John MacArthur's sermon last night called "Welcoming the New Anti-christ" was a treatise on how the church in the past saw the office of pope (as evil) and was not afraid to say so. He called today's conservatives and evangelicals cowards who will not stand for truth in calling the RCC a false church and the seat of pope an antichrist spirit. He was equally clear that the Catholics caught in bondage to that system need evangelizing and we are to love them as the victims they are of satan's delusion and deceit. He mentioned a man whom they baptized recently who had been a believer for a little less than two years, after having spent 75 years in the Catholic system. "We need stories like this" he said.

I can't wait until the sermon is posted, I became tired at around 10:30 pm and didn't finish the last 15 minutes or so.

    1. I saw Pastor MacArthur's sermon last night as well (most of it, anyway. The live stream was in and out for the first 10-15 minutes. I blame my lame internet provider). It was a great message that needs to be heard by as many as possible. Trust me, as soon as it's posted at Grace to You, it also will be posted here. :)

  4. The Roman Catholic Church, the Pope and,, anyone who joins hands with her are the very height and the very essence of Satanic hubris and wickedness.

The sons and daughters of Satan who have worshiped the Baals and Ashterahs of their own depraved hearts will find themselves cast into the everlasting lake of fire as the heavens rejoice: “And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.” - Rev. 19:1-2

  5. Before judging the Catholic Church, it would be wise to study Catholic teaching from the source, not just from hearsay. This, for example, is a section of the Catechism that clearly states Christ's headship over the Church:

792 Christ "is the head of the body, the Church."225 He is the principle of creation and redemption. Raised to the Father's glory, "in everything he [is] preeminent,"226 especially in the Church, through whom he extends his reign over all things.

(Paragraph 792, _Catechism of the Catholic Church_.
    Footnotes 225 and 226 reference Colossians 1:18.)

    1. Having studied catholic teaching from it's source it is not necessary for me to pronounce condemnation upon the catholic "church"---their own words will condemn them (and you, unless you repent). The catholic teaching is one lie built upon another to support the previous lies. Though they speak of Jesus, the catholic jesus is not the same Jesus of the New Testament. Perhaps you should consult the council of Trent and vatican II before you spread any more catholic lies. In these two documents you will find that the catholic "church" hates the real Jesus, and has replaced Him in their system of lies with one whom they can control. You will also find that Mary has been replaced with a fake mary who is equal to or better than the real Jesus because she has been elevated to a position of co-redeemer with the demand of the catholic system of lies that a "believer" must pray to and request salvation from the mary of Rome.

"In evrything he[is] preeminent," 226 especially in the Church, through whom he extends his reign over all things. No, He does not reign through the real Church. HE REIGNS, PERIOD. He has, does now, and forever shall reign without the aid or assitance of the Church (real or catholic).

May the Holy Spirit open your eyes to the real Truth of who Jesus Christ really is and cause you to turn from the idols of the catholic systm of lies and be born again. Matt. 7:21-23.

Thank you for your reply and an attempt to substantiate your position from your original sources, i.e. The Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church. I am glad that these issues are keeping you up this late and they should. As far as ad populum and so cliche misrepresentation of "judging". See all and everyone is being judged and will be judged by God and His Word and since we do have that Word we should use it to discern the truth from a lie, i.e. judge what is a lie. Look:

"The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day."
      (John 12:48 ESV)

I know that holding the Word of God as the highest authority in the matters of faith is a strange and alien concept to you but that is what the Word teaches. Calling to wisdom is always valid but is it valid to condescendingly assume that none studied Roman Catholicism and its documents? I think not for I have for example studied it and have been trapped in this man made system and I am prepared to take you to any Roman document starting with Catechism to papal encyclicals, bulls, council documents or even books by your popes.

Se what you do not realize is that Romanism is deeply dichotomous and inconsistent and always evolving and as such is a mixture of truth and many more lies and corruptions. Yes, even though the point mentioned by you is affirming the biblical truth yet there are so many other points that de facto qualify it, change it, add to it or simple outright deny it. One has to have all of these in perspective to truly understand how wickedly sophisticated Roman trap of falsehood is. For example look below and read carefully to see how what you quoted from paragraph 792 of your Catechism is undermined and qualified by asserting certain qualities to your pope:

is undermined and qualified by asserting certain qualities to your pope:

882 The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter's successor, "is the perpetual and visible SOURCE and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.""For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church HAS full, supreme, and universal POWER over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise UNHINDERED."

883 "The college or body of bishops has no authority UNLESS united with the Roman Pontiff, Peter's successor, AS ITS HEAD." As such, this college has "supreme and full authority over the universal Church; but this power cannot be exercised WITHOUT the agreement of the Roman Pontiff."

The Catechism of Roman Catholic Church, Paragraphs 882 & 883
      Vatican Site Link: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p123a9p4.htm

So if you use logic and reason and assume that words do have meanings (as you should) you must admit that you have a peculiar situation here. For on one hand quoted by you text from paragraph 792 rightly states that: " Christ "is the head of the body, the Church..." and on another the text I quoted from the very same source i.e. Roman Catechism also states that: "...the Roman Pontiff, Peter's successor, AS ITS HEAD..." :0)

You may automatically dismiss this proof and put yourself back into your religious mode but what we have here is a real monstrosity, a body with no less but TWO HEADS as quoted and substantiated. This dear Roman Catholic is a pathology, a monstrous mutation and corruption of any body and certainly of what is true body of Christ which is always with ONE HEAD - Christ Himself. As to who is true Vicar of Christ that is God the Holy Spirit one of the names that your pope assigns to himself after the name of Holy Father which belongs to God the Father only. A terrible blasphemies heaped up on him and Roman Church after so many others. So indeed it is always wise to study original sources please do that comprehensively with yours and above all DO STUDY The Word of God above anything else for that is the source of truth and the fountain of true Christian Faith. The more you will study this Word the more you will see how wickedly nefarious is the word of fallen men you have been sold as true in your religion.

  6. If these Catechism's are true that Christ is the Head of the Church then why does the RCC raise themselves above the Word of God?

God's word says clearly that God ALONE forgives us of our sins-Luke 5:21

Yet, in Roman Catholicism, they say that Mary is the mediatrix (Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 969); Mary made atonement for the sins of man (Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, page 213); Mary is the subject of preaching and worship ((Vatican Council II, p. 420); etc.

Where is this in God's Word? It's not there. They go beyond what is written in God's word (1 Cor. 4:6).

The Roman Catholic Church also raises her throne above Christ as the Head of the Church when she elevates herself to Also violate the biblical doctrine of salvation by grace through faith alone. Paul the apostle, for example, tells us in Romans 4:5, "But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness." But Roman Catholicism denies that and says, "...so that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments," (CCC, par 2068). Also, consider this:
"If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema" (Council of Trent, Canons on Justification, Canon 9).

The Pope and the whole Roman Catholic Church System- NULLIFY the WORD OF GOD by their traditions-Matthew 15:6.

"as it is written: " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men." And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!" -Mark 7:7-9

Thus they have usurped the Headship of Christ~

  7. Y'all should read Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn. I'll pray you undergo his same transformation, from vehemently anti-Catholic Reformed pastor to passionately Catholic teacher of scripture. May God bless your journey and lighten your eyes to see the truth of the Catholic Church and the beauty of the sacraments (Eucharist and Confession) in drawing a believer close to the heart of Christ. As you wrestle with these things, I'd also recommend Christian Smith's How to Go From Good Evangelical to Committed Catholic in 95 Difficult Steps, Steve Ray's Crossing the Tiber, and the good folks at Catholic Answers. 2. Anonymous, The word of God is sufficient. The RCC is diametrically opposed to the Word of the LIVING GOD.

In fact ONLY Jesus has the words of eternal life, where will I go?" -John 6:68----Answer nowhere because God's word is "Spirit and it is LIFE".-John 6:63

God's word is living and active sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing to the dividing of soul and spirit, joint and marrow, judging the thoughts and attitudes of the heart"-Hebrews 4:12

God's word is sufficient which means that it's not only adequate but it is abundant and overflowing-2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work".

Jesus said God's word is the TRUTH-"Sanctify them by the truth; Thy word is truth"-John 17:17

And by the way Anonymous Christians, Genuine believers are not on some "journey". Christians are already possessors of the Truth and rest in CHRIST our beloved Lord and Savoir. People who are on journeys are restless not finding peace when Jesus said "Come to ME all who are weary and burdened and I will give you REST"-

listen to what the Psalmist says:
"The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple."

"The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes."

"The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous."

"They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb."

"By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward."
      -Psalm 19:7-11

Ahhh, dear friend have you ever ---"did eat His word and it became sweet like honey in their mouth? –Ezekiel 3:3..

The word of God is ALL we NEED--"Even the bitter tastes sweet"-Pr.27:7 because God's promises are true and we are anchored in the truth "Christ in me the hope of glory"-woohooo!!! All glory to GOD in the highest

I would like to know how your platitudes suppose to provide any answers to our biblical arguments vaporizing your rhetoric based on selective reading and and misreading of your own Roman Catechism? Catechism which you do not know that well apparently? If your religion is so true and this Roman incantation of: "extra Ecclesiam nulla salus" is true then why do you have to bait and switch, evade and then run for cover? :0) Why if you are of the truth?

People whom you have mentioned were never Christians in the first place. Never. 1 John 2:19 You speak about your "god" blessings. Thanks but no for your "god" who supposedly is same "god" whom your Muslim brothers in faith worship and adore IS NOT TRUE. It is a vain, idol only. Look at your own Catechism which you do not know that well:

'841 The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also INCLUDES those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom ARE the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and TOGETHER WITH US they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day.'

Catechism of Roman Catholic Church, Paragraph 841
      Vatican Link: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P29.HTM

You have been duped and decived and have believed another "gospel" and another "god" repent and believe in true God and true Gospel for the time is short.

Please read this presentation and general summation of the attributes of your men made religion of merit:

"...What, then, are we looking at? We are looking at a system; and I would not hesitate to assert that this system, Known as Roman Catholicism, is the devil's greatest masterpiece! It is such a departure from the Christian faith and the New Testament teaching, that I would not hesitate with the Reformers of the sixteenth century to describe it as "apostasy". Now let us be clear about this.

We define apostasy as a kind of total departure from the Christian truth. "Well," says someone, "are you saying that about the Roman Catholic Church?" We have to be most careful here. If we say that Roman Catholicism is apostasy we must be clear as to the sense in which that is true. let me put it like this therefore. Here it is not so much a matter of "denial" of the truth, but rather such an addition to the truth that eventually it becomes a departure from it..."
