James MacDonald Proud to Have Rick Warren, Mark Driscoll & Bill Hybels Endorse 'Vertical Church' Book

It won't be long before James MacDonald's newest book, Vertical Church, hits store shelves and possibly even your local church, as he takes his book to the streets with his Vertical Church Tour.

Perhaps MacDonald borrowed this idea from his friend Matt Chandler, who earlier this year boarded his own tour bus for his book, The Explicit Gospel. Hopefully Chandler offered MacDonald some bus traveling tips while the two hung out together this past week in Chicago:

Source
Matt Chandler not only likes Harvest Bible Chapel's (HBC) newest campus in downtown Chicago, but he also apparently likes MacDonald's soon-to-be-released book, as he appears on the lengthy list of pastors and leaders who have endorsed it. Chandler is not the biggest name to lend his credibility to Vertical Church though. No, three other names stand out as far bigger and far more influential. Judging from this past week's video announcements at Harvest Bible Chapel, it is these three endorsements of which MacDonald is the most proud:

Yes, we just heard it proudly announced to the congregation of HBC that Rick Warren, Mark Driscoll and Bill Hybels are "freaking out," presumedly in a favorable fashion, over James MacDonald's book. The Vertical Church website shares the full list of endorsers:

It seems the only name missing is that of T.D. Jakes, but perhaps MacDonald was unable to slip him a copy of Vertical Church while he was celebrating 35 years of T.D. Jakes' ministry earlier this month.

The astute reader will notice that many of the names above are appearing together rather consistently. In fact, this pattern is visibly developing as the same names continue to appear together at each other's various conferences. Notice that several of MacDonald's endorsers will be speaking alongside him at the 2012 Resurgence Conference and at Perry Noble's upcoming Newspring Leadership Conference:

This emerging pattern may cause us to wonder: Are we witnessing the development of a new, evangelical, ecumenical magisterium with the men of the Elephant Room at the helm? It may not be as far-fetched as it sounds.

  1. I wonder where were all of these endorsers, these men when James MacDonald pronounced a fake "gospel" pimp and a sabellian modalist heretic TD Jakes as a "brother" in Christ earlier this year??? Where were they? More importantly don't they know that by endorsing this book by James MacDonald WITHOUT their prior critique of his divisive error and so soon after it (and all other errors that fallowed it like MacDonald using black race to shamefully divide the church even more to advance his agenda and to silence weaker critics) they in fact absolve MacDonald from his massive error? Absolve without his correction and his public repentance? Don't they know that by their endorsements de facto they approve and promote what MacDonald did and still does?
What about all these people MacDonald attacked in such nefarious and machiavellian ways? What about the brothers he threatened with the arrest? More importantly what about the Gospel and the nature of God he compromised and undermined in his unchecked, prideful foolishness?
Is this all really about coterie and social cliques and helping each other to make more money and maintain influence? None of these men have any courage to stand against this? Perhaps most disappointing name on that endorsment list is the name of the President of the Moody Bible Institute Paul Nyquist... Brethren, if the President of Moody Bible Institute does not have enough discernment and courage as to doing the right thing here then indeed we are in perilous times and the visible church is in full blown apostasy and is going down like a Titanic while these men dance to their own tune on their top leavenjellycal deck and loving it...

  3. If you really want to see what is going on, study the Counter Reformation and the Jesuits own blood oath. As the saying goes, "All roads lead to Rome" and the blood thirsty Jesuits are gleefully watching the Protestant church implode. But good news!! God has reserved His remnant and the gates of hell will NEVER prevail against it. Don't stand there looking down and discouraged, rejoice for our salvation draws near! This situation was prophecied in Holy Writ. We know that this must happen before the great and glorious day of the Lord. This goes along with the Fallen One's plan for a one world government religion and sadly these men are either naive, misled or deceivers ready to sign over Biblical sovereignty to the church of Rome. Let's please pray for their eyes to be open and at least that the eyes of those in their care are open soon, before it's too late. Remember Jesus warned that the elect "could" be deceived if that were possible.

    1. I've never cared for Rick Warren who I believe has proven to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. He has always been very crafty and has spoken with a forked tongue..

some of these things that are happening so fast.. Just the other day I listened to Brannon Howse and the Glen Beck "loveee" rally.. I cannot believe what names of people are joining in support of all this ecumenism... Tony Evans, Ravi Zacharias.... I know these 2 guys are Christians but what's going on here?? Pastors of all people who lack discernment especially in light of 2 John 9 and 2 Cor.6:14-15? I know they know the word of God. Is there some spirit of stupor falling on the Church?

I'm down and sad and vexed to the point it's literally making me a bit nauseous. I'm Home sick.. I wanna go home to be with the Lord Jesus. I'm so tired of all the wickedness and the precious bride of Christ to be is committing adultery and it's being hailed as wonderful...
We need to return to the Gospel of Grace the reformation true protestantism---"The Gospel stands or falls on the gospel of grace"

    2. Its the Mysticism... Its The Mysticism... It ends up promoting this kind of ecumenical , doctrine-less..false love...

    3. You're so right anonymous --more right than I thought..Mysticism is more dangerous than I thought. It's taking the whole Church like a spate..I didn't know it was this seductive... Mysticism is adulterous love.. This is not the love of God in Christ.. I'm a slight bit in tears over this as I honestly can't reconcile adulterous lustful love with the purity, uniqueness and holiness of God's love...

Anon--Thanks for putting a name to this

    4. @ Connie,

You are seeing with clarity what is actually happening in a broad leavenjellycalism. This is indeed a turbulence anticipated, supported and coming from a wake of circling close by mother-ship Rome near by and waiting with martinis for the jumpers of the vagabond "Protestant" leavenjellycal drifter. The so called "conversions" to Romanism are on the raise or at least the publicity of them and surely when this happens to pastors like recently to Jason Stellman who "no longer could believe in Sola Fide or Sola Scriptura" (READ here: http://bit.ly/OMfWAL )one cannot help but see a correlation with all the other weird and sickening developments which James MacDonald and his leavenjellycal syndication around fee based "miracle maker" shameless pimp and thief TD Jakes the sebellian modalist. The time of Matthew 24:10-11 maybe drawing near and I am not big on eschaton as it is popularly understood.

And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.
      ~ Matthew 24:10-11

I am ready but I know it will not be that easy. As the early church suffered so will the late and for a long time too.

    5. Rick Warren would not have been so welcomed by people and accepted if it were not for John Piper... I believe Rick has pandered to John and this has caused those who love Piper to follow the pied piper to open up to Roman Catholicism as well.... RCC has been the impetus behind all these men..

  4. James MacDonald and his list of prominent endorsers are an ominous amalgamation of pastors who do NOT preach or teach the full counsel of Holy Scripture. Those that I’m familiar with each have their own brand of manipulative error, and it’s clear that this is the uniting force behind their cooperation with each other.

Since this subject was brought up…I formerly supported Moody Bible Institute and Moody Radio. This once faithful institution has fallen quite far, with grotesque compromise. I almost don’t recognize it as a Biblical organization any longer.

So much could be said about Moody… but I will leave it at this:
I still have my alarm radio tuned to WMBI, so I do hear a few minutes in the morning. In just the last few days WBMI quoted the Pope favorably at length, and also announced the passing of Gore Vidal. WMBI even mentioned by name one of Vidal’s bestselling novels, known for extreme perversion, with absolutely no qualifying statement of the judgment and wrath of God that resides on works of evil and those that perpetuate them.

Is this in accordance with the behavior and focus of a godly institution? MBI’s new focus is the peddling of moral corruption and the undermining of genuine faith.

I want to make it clear I’m talking about the institution itself, and not individual employees or students who may still be faithful to the Lord.

  5. Have any of you who are criticizing JMac or this book even read it yet? Probably not.

While I am no fan of James, given his questionable choices, double talk (do what I say but not what I do), and even his peddling efforts (tour, music, etc), as a former member of HBC, I don't think it is right to criticize book or the endorsers before even reading it.

As for me, I don't plan on reading it as it is not worth my time after having lived through it.

    1. In fairness X, I'm not reading much criticism on the book, but on the associations and the mutual applause/appreciation going on. I'm sure plenty will be written about the book in time.

After this, we really shouldn't have to stop the presses anymore when JM lines up with the Warren's and Hybels' of Evangelica. He is squarely in their seeker-centered camp. It does beg the question though, where is his new ER2 short-list twitter buddy WF/Modalist TDJ on this?

  6. In follow-up to my previous post above…I would like to add one more thought.

In recent years the church has seen a proliferation of elaborate ministry events and books/DVDs/CDs. The marketing involved is very sophisticated, as evidenced by the recent example of James MacDonald’s upcoming book tour. A tour that will take him away from his congregation while he is promoting his product.

My earnest question is this: Why is the church copying the world as a means to impart teaching? Why do these leaders spend so much time generating attention and special events while ignoring the individual believers in their own church, whom they have been called to shepherd? Isn’t that what a pastor is called to do?

They use advertising themes: Resurgence! Code Orange! Elephant Room! Wow, NewSpring Leadership Conference sounds really bland. Has anyone notified Perry Noble?

They use the endorsement method to pique interest similar to the Oprah book club, or self-help gurus featured on PBS.

My point is that this is the normal route to make a profit. Many of these ministry event tickets and books/DVDs/CDs are not free. There is a cost to the flock to participate. So who is actually profiting….is it the church, in edification? Or is it the pastors and business people that run these productions and publish these materials? Just food for thought.

  7. The Megachurches have always felt that they should copy "best practices" from where-ever they exist which includes marketing, distribution, management, donors (tithers). I think WillowCreek was the first pioneers of this type of thinking. I recalled that the JMac's royalties sales of this book all goes to his "sacrificial" contribution to the 5G capital campaign.
Low book sales = Low sacrifice, High book sales = Low sacrifice

    2. Dear X:

Not only am I an ex-Harvester, but a 20 year veteran of Willow Creek, so to attempt to toss a stone at those of us critics here at the site about the book has lost it's meaning on me. I don't think that is what we are concerned about. What's one more book to add to the glut of books already trying to show Chrisitanity how to do church? My issue has to do with the years I spent at Willow and Harvest. My eyes were slowly opened to what happens when the shepherds take their eyes off the sheep and head into the area of celebrity. I see the slow creep of ecumenism (though it seems to be accelerating right now) and the surprising favor shown to guys like Glen Beck by those trusted Bible scholars and teachers and that's what baffles me. I expected the New Apostolic Reformation and Emergent guys to get together because of their focus on experience and mysticism, but NOT guys like Piper, Jeremiah, and Zacharias. Then add MacDonald and Chandler to the equation and it seems that no one is exempt from Rome's grasp. And if you don't think Rome is behind this do a little research on the gurus behind this movement and you will not only see Peter Drucker (a self professing non Christian) but also Robert Schuller who visited the vatican to get the Pope's papal blessing before he opened his Crystal Cathedral which is now owned by the Catholic church. This has the markings of the counter Reformation all over it.

As Steve Lawson has said and I paraphrase, "Give us men who don't compromise but who stand as Calvin, Luther, and Polycarp for the Gospel." My current pastor did say that though there are many who are failing as shepherds, the invisible church is not compromising and is growing. Not like the mega churches but small enclaves of true Bible believing fellowships. I hope he is right.

  8. After reviewing my comments I think it only fair that I point the readers to the key parts of the blood oath taken by ALL Jesuits so you know that my comments toward the Roman papacy and the Jesuits are not just the rantings of an angry ex-Catholic, ex-Willow Creeker, and Ex-Harvester. The past year or so I have become keenly aware through faithful bloggers and films I have purchased about the continuance to the day of the Counter Reformation started by Ignatius Loyola. I recommend the book The Secret History of the Jesuits by Edmond Paris which details their plan to infiltrate and destroy Protestant Christianity as well as all governments around the world. The following quote is taken directly from the Jesuit Oath and it is not in it's entirety, but I hope you can see why I am so concerned about the radical shift in mainline evangelicalism and how it appears that the fingerprints of the Jesuits are all over this. Here is the quote:

"When a Jesuit of the minor rank is to be elevated to command, he is conducted into the Chapel of the Convent of the Order, where there are only three others present, the principal or Superior standing in front of the altar. On either side stands a monk, one of whom holds a banner of yellow and white, which are the Papal colors, and the other a black banner with a dagger and red cross above a skull and crossbones, with the word INRI, and below them the words IUSTUM, NECAR, REGES, IMPIOUS. The meaning of which is: It is just to exterminate or annihilate impious or heretical Kings, Governments, or Rulers. Upon the floor is a red cross at which the postulant or candidate kneels. The Superior hands him a small black crucifix, which he takes in his left hand and presses to his heart, and the Superior at the same time presents to him a dagger, which he grasps by the blade and holds the point against his heart, the Superior still holding it by the hilt, and thus addresses the postulant:"

    Superior:

"My son, heretofore you have been taught to act the dissembler: among Roman Catholics to be a Roman Catholic, and to be a spy even among your own brethren; to believe no man, to trust no man. Among the Reformers, to be a reformer; among the Huguenots, to be a Huguenot; among the Calvinists, to be a Calvinist; among other Protestants, generally to be a Protestant, and obtaining their confidence, to seek even to preach from their pulpits, and to denounce with all the vehemence in your nature our Holy Religion and the Pope; and even to descend so low as to become a Jew among Jews, that you might be enabled to gather together all information for the benefit of your Order as a faithful soldier of the Pope."

This is part of what the initiate repeats back:

"Therefore, to the utmost of my power I shall and will defend this doctrine of his Holiness' right and custom against all usurpers of the heretical or Protestant authority whatever, especially the Lutheran of Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the now pretended authority and churches of England and Scotland, and branches of the same now established in Ireland and on the Continent of America and elsewhere; and all adherents in regard that they be usurped and heretical, opposing the sacred Mother Church of Rome. I do now renounce and disown any allegiance as due to any heretical king, prince or state named Protestants or Liberals, or obedience to any of the laws, magistrates or officers."

The rest of the oath can be found on line, but I warn you, you will see in the oath the drastic, diabolic, and evil nature of their mandate to "extirpate" those who go against the mother-church. It kind of makes the Islamic extremists look like boy scouts.

To God the Father, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit be the glory, Amen!

Dear Connie, I haven't thought that of you.. I read your comments and you are passionate about exposing ther errors.. If this is what the Lord has laid on your heart then Praise the LORD...

Thanks for the warnings and being so studious about the Jesuits etc..

    2. Dear Linda:

Yes, to answer your question I am passionate about exposing not only error, but the real danger that is facing the Bride of Christ. In my opinion this is a matter of life and death and I don't think I am being hyperbolic. Sometimes it may seem that folks who try to practice discernment may come off harsh and unkind, but I do believe it is because they love God and His Church that they are prepared to become as I say "the skunk at the pool party" in evangelicalism. I do not dislike Catholics, or wayward Protestants, I love them and want to see them saved as I would anyone else, but this diabolical scheme of the devil to use groups like the Jesuits to do his dastardly deeds forces me to expose their work.

I also would recommend anyone who finds themselves scratching their heads as to why we are seeing this embrace of new age Mormons such as Glen Beck, and have no qualms about partnering with him in spriitual matters, to do their own research on the Internet (before that becomes a thing of the past.) Be careful as there is intentional disinformation as well, consider the Hegelian dialetic. Then pray like never before for discernment and pray for those discernment ministries like this site that we all are filled with God's Holy Spirit, we speak the truth in love, and we preach the Gospel in season and out of season. Satan loves when we eat our own and he is the master of divide and conquer. We must determine the hills to die on and for me it is this one. Literally and figuratively.

    3. "We must determine the hills to die on and for me it is this one. Literally and figuratively."

      @Connie,

You will not be alone on this one Connie. I am there too. That is not a lofty aspiration on my part only. I have scars and price paid to prove it. Being raised in Roman Catholic family and in a staunch Roman Catholic country I was drawn to the saving faith as the first one, and so far the only one in my family. I know what I am talking about when I talk about the human price of faith which pales to what others went through but still it was a real and heavy cost... As if that was not enough after the initial stint with Pentecostalism and Mega "Churchianity" the Lord uncomprehendingly at the time and single-handedly without one personal human witness brought me to Reformed Faith which brought another share of price to pay, scars to heal and relationships that went to dust. Yet it was all worth it for the unceasing joy to know the true Gospel of the Lord of Glory Jesus Christ the Righteous Savior or His people upon whose mercy I throw myself daily.

  9. Dear Depeville:

The times are getting worse and what makes it hard in Western culture to entertain these thoughts is that we have been sold a bill of goods by modern church leaders that we are captains of our own destiny and we deserve to attain our goals and dreams which are really God's dream. Then I read the Puritans and they speak humbly about their own unworthiness and desire to be counted worthy to DIE for Christ. That rocked my own personal world as I could not grasp the idea of willingly giving up my life as I contend for the faith. But isn't that what happened to many Chrisitians as they were being persecuted for their faith? And didn't Jesus say they would revile and persecute us because of Him? I would recommend serious Christians get Foxe's Book of Martyrs just to begin to understand what it may cost to be real followers of Jesus. This book recounts the martyrdom of nearly every Christian from the time of the Apostles to the middle 19th century. And if you want to be really awakened go to Voice of the Martyrs website and see what is happening today. It has been said that more people have died for the Lord in this past century than in all centuries in the past. I don't have a way of corroborating that but I do know that through mass genocide millions if not billions of people have died and many, many were Christian.

I pray that God give all of us the grace to face any and all persecution whether we are ridiculed or rejected by our friends and family as well as possible physical threats. I also pray that we do not return evil for evil because it is a testimony to the faithfulness of our Lord.

    1. We need to return to the doctrines of Grace, to truly fearing the LORD. If we don't know God is truly Sovereign then man tends to deify himself.. We need to learn to acknowledge HIM in all our ways and HE will direct our paths.. Who is GOD? What are his attributes and how wise is God.. He's GOD not us....

I find myself trying to figure things out in my own wisdom and then Scripture reminds me "do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and shun evil."-- God is ALL-Wise not me,, GOD is everywhere at the same time,,, NOT me,, Only GOD knows the future not me.

Many Christians think too much apart from the LORD...

      It's sad

I'm excited for what the LORD has taught you Connie.. Continue in HIS unmerited GRACE and mercy and get to know Jesus Christ in ways you've never known him that you will be filled with HIS JOY as never before....
