Repentance is the Inseparable Companion of Saving Faith

Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:12-17)
The first doctrine that our Lord proclaimed to the world was repentance (v. 17). The necessity of repentance is one of the great foundations which lie at the very bottom of Christianity (Heb. 6:1). It needs to be pressed on all mankind without exception. High or low, rich or poor, all have sinned and are guilty before God; and all must repent and be converted if they are to be saved. And true repentance is no light matter. It is a thorough change of heart about sin, a change showing itself in godly sorrow and humiliation (2 Cor. 7:10), in heartfelt confession before the throne of grace, in a complete breaking off from sinful habits, and an abiding hatred of sin. Such repentance is the inseparable companion of saving faith in Christ. Let us prize the doctrine highly. It is of the highest importance. No Christian teaching can be sound which does not constantly bring forward repentance towards God and faith towards the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21). - J.C. Ryle, Expository Thoughts on Matthew, 28-29.

  1. WE cannot truly repent unless God in his great mercy grants us His amazing grace. A person truly repents when they see the glorious gospel. When we SEE for the first time our grunge and stench in the LIGHT of the eternal true Gospel of the glory of GOD in the FACE of CHRIST, Oh my LORD, I'm so unworthy. I've SINNED against YOU and YOU ALONE LORD...

"He touched me and all the JOY that floods my soul" will ALWAYS be the most poignant line in a song written for what truly happened to me as GOD pierced my heart with His scepter of Grace and love. the pivotal moment of my utter existence flooded my heart when JESUS bowed his KNEE low enough so I could see his BEAUTY and how unworthy I was like the beautiful diamond so scintillate against the backdrop of my blackened filthy heart...

Repentance is evidenced by the FEAR of the LORD God Almighty. It's not a fear of punishment at all but an awesome fear of reverence and awe--the kind that loves so, so much that wants to keep your heart so clean. The kind of fear that hangs on every word God's word says, the kind that doesn't ever want to do wrong or displease the Lord again.

I pray many people will truly come to know the fear of the Lord through Repentance for it is the ONLY true medicine that brings healing in our hearts and true reconciliation to God as our Father

Thanks for the writings by JC Riles that just revived me once again to the Greatness of our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ!
