Saddleback Church: "God is Mad About You"

Yesterday, like many churches, pastors and individuals, Rick Warren's Saddleback Church sent out Christmas wishes on Twitter. Unfortunately, they also sent out some bad theology:

(Online Source)
That's right, God is C-R-A-Z-Y, gaga over you. It's all about you! In fact, this almost makes it sound as though Christmas is even about you! Congratulations, wretched sinner, you are awesome. With no visible disclaimer, this message presumably is for everybody, even those who have not been washed by the blood of Christ, saved by grace through faith in Him. Apparently, texts like James 4:4 don't mean a thing to this "church."
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4:4)
Seeing the above tweet from Saddleback Church brought back memories of junior high, when boys and girls would express their "feelings" for one another in the manner of a carefully folded note, passed quietly in history class.

It seems that God is just passing you a note in class, because He's "mad about you." Won't you check "Yes" and tell Him that you like Him, too?

Friend, if you have not repented and placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, then you are not a friend of God. You are His enemy. All have sinned, all have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). If not covered by the perfect blood of the spotless Lamb, we cannot stand before our holy God, for we are not righteous of ourselves.
as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
in their paths are ruin and misery,
and the way of peace they have not known.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:10-18)
And if, then, we are living lost and dead in our sins, we are at war with a holy God.
God is a righteous judge,
and a God who feels indignation every day.
If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;
he has bent and readied his bow; (Psalm 7:11-12)
So, either Saddleback lied, or God has lied to us in His Word. It shouldn't take too long to figure out which. But hey, anything for a warm-fuzzy tweet on Christmas Day, right?
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers. (Psalm 5:4-5)
Without Jesus Christ, you are not and cannot be reconciled to God. And so, with the Apostle Paul, I implore you, "on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20).

  1. This is a great post. Very good insights. It reflects the continuing lowering of God in man's mind and the attendant lifting up of man in his own mind. I remember when I was researching Beth Moore I came across her saying something similar, that God is crazy in love with us. The way she made Him sound was of a hormone-led teenager with a puppy love crush, and that submitting to him is like going to a Sadie Hawkins dance-rather than Him being the embodiment of Holiness and love itself.

    Sometimes I feel that we're using a teaspoon to shovel back the avalanche of pabulum coming from today's pulpits. But then I remember, Oh yes, The Holy Spirit in us is greater than he who is in the world! :)

  2. "The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2: 9-12

    Sadly both Saddleback Church and Rick Warren have an audience - to the discredit and shame of the audience. If people were committed to the Lord to learn and to grow in their faith - the Saddlebacks and Warrens of the world would be scorned and shown for what they really are.

    These types are a sad reflection of the state of the church today.

  3. Good commments, Elizabeth.

    Yesterday (Christmas) my family and I visited a small church near by as our megachurch was not having any services that day. My children, who have been raised at our megachurch, had no clue what to do in this small church with hymnals, no praise band, and a recitation of a memory verse for the entire congregation, and responsive confession. But what struck me the most was that the pastor himself led the worship (no "worship team" needed here) and during the entire service, the pastor made not one joke and did not have anything to say about himself. Everything, and i do mean EVERYTHING was directed to God and about God.

    After the service, the pastor greeted us personally and made us feel very welcome. I have never met the senior pastor of our megachurch other than when he baptized me but even then, there was no conversation beforehand.

    Giving me much to think about.

    Ebenz, once again I thank you for the work you put into this blog. I feel as though my eyes are being opened.

  5. Its narcissism -2 Timothy 3:2a "People will be lovers of themselves,"

    People esteem self more than they esteem God

    Sin in the Old Testament is compared to leprosy. So why in the world would God be "mad about men?" How delusional can you get? No these men are rabidly obsessed with self to the point where they are mad

    to love to keep your leprosy and praise each other for it and say well God just loves us.
    Sadly they don’t see any difference and continue to sustain such a lofty opinion of themselves with the illusion that God loves us and we are so special to him. They’d rather vanish the truth that God hates all who do wrong-Psalm 5:5.

    Great post
