Sunday Morning Praise

A blessed Lord's Day to you! I decided awhile ago that I wanted to use this song. In searching for a video, though, the most beautiful and most complete version was in German! Perhaps that is because "Fairest Lord Jesus" was originally composed in the German language by German Jesuits. So I'm going to do something a bit different with the lyrics. The first lyrics posted will be a (nearly) literal translation from the German. It won't be flowing and rhyming, but it will be the truest to the original song. I'd like to send a huge thanks to my mom for translating this hymn! The second and third sets of lyrics are the two English versions that you'll likely recognize. Enjoy!

Literal Translation:
Beautiful Lord Jesus,
Lord of all ends,
Son of God and Mary,
You, I want to love
You, I want to honor
Joy (or delight) and crown (King) of my soul.

Beautiful are the fields (meadows),
More beautiful are the forests
in the splendor of Springtime,
Jesus is fairer (lovelier),
Jesus is purer,
Who delights (comforts) my wretched (mournful) soul.

Beautifully shines the moon,
More beautifully shines the sun
and all of the stars altogether,
Jesus shines fairer (lovelier),
Jesus shines purer,
Than all the angels of all time.

Beautiful are the flowers,
beautiful are the people (mankind)
in their fresh youth,
They must die,
They must fall (perish, spoil),
Jesus remains in eternity (forever).

All of the beauty (fairness)
of the heavens and the earth,
is written (authored) in Him alone,
Nothing on earth should
become dearer to me,
than you, my dearest Jesus!

Most hymnals contain the following lyrics under the title, Fairest Lord Jesus:

Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
O Thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine,
Fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.

All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly,
Wondrously, Jesus, is found in Thee;
None can be nearer, fairer or dearer,
Than Thou, my Savior, art to me.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forever more be Thine.

The original translation of this song by Joseph Seiss is entitled Beautiful Savior:

Beautiful Savior, King of Creation
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands,
Robed in the flowers of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
He makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be Thine!
